It’s Good Friday, and for those of us in the UK that means a 4-day weekend and hot cross buns! Or not buns…

I don’t know whether it’s just that I haven’t picked up on it before, but I’ve started to notice a trend in hot cross buns that aren’t buns at all…

• Biscuiteers released a photo to their Instagram of biscuits decorated as hot cross buns.
• I also came across this recipe for hot cross bun cupcakes and another one here.
• Choconchoc are selling hot cross buns made entirely of chocolate or “hot choc buns”.
• And then there’s this BBC Good Food recipe for hot cross bun cheesecakes.

On a slightly different note, I keep seeing hot cross buns with bacon in the middle – I may actually give that a try today and see what all the hype is about.
