Pham Sushi, Whitecross Street

Pham Sushi on Whitecross Street is an oldie but a goodie! Well…I don’t know about old, but it’s not a new opening – I just had to write about it because it’s so darn good. I am pretty lucky to have such a great Japanese restaurant so close to where I work.

You can see the sushi chef beavering away in the kitchen to turn out these beautiful creations. Below from left to right are crunchy tuna rolls, mixed vegetable sushi and flying dragon rolls – eel and asparagus rolls with tempura bits topped with avocado and fish roe.

They have an extensive sushi menu and I can’t begin to describe how delicious it is! The crunchy tuna is my favourite filled with salmon and asparagus filling wrapped in a layer of rice, tempura flakes, and seared tuna. The last time I was there I was with Charmain from Wayward Eater. We tried the rainbow rolls which are white fish and fish roe rolls wrapped with colourful alternating strips of tuna, salmon, and avocado.

The menu doesn’t just offer sushi. One of the reasons I love this place so much is because it has a range of hot food too. I often find that restaurants with great sushi often fall down on the hot food, but not Pham Sushi!

Check out this whole fried soft shell crab – YUM!

One of my all-time favourite Japanese dishes is unagi don or which is grilled eel marinated in a rich, sticky, sweet sauce and served over a bowl of Japanese rice. Even though it’s a delicious dish, it can often be a bit too rich and cloying, but again Pham Sushi nails this dish and it’s perfectly balanced. I reckon I could eat it all day!

I also really like their bento boxes like their house special bento where you get a choice of chicken, salmon or mackerel served with rice, miso soup, salad, and sashimi.

And then there’s the good old katsu curry which is just as yummy and comforting as you want it to be.

If you like authentic Japanese you should give it a go and they have a takeaway menu too – let me know what you think!
